The decision tree above was created in Lucidchart to help university faculty understand and prioritize the areas of course redesign needing the most attention and alteration when shifting university courses from a face-to-face to an online modality during the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision tree format was selected because it could support those working in widely varied institutional conditions across numerous disciplines with differing approaches to teaching and assessment. This job aid incorporates several complex topics into one resource that can support both self-assessment, peer-learning, and problem-solving with other higher education professionals. The decision tree was ultimately shared by and for instructional designers working closely with faculty in higher education.

Elearning

The example above was created in Articulate Storyline as a proof of concept. The purpose was to demonstrate whether online training can meet the needs of learners and organizations when addressing cognitively complex, emotionally charged topics for which learners must apply knowledge and skills in intense, small group, interactive settings. After outlining a faculty search committee training comprised of four courses, the most interactive and challenging lesson was chosen to develop as the proof of concept. The lesson focuses on how to interrupt implicit bias in interactions and decision-making among hiring committees. It uses triggers, character states, and branching to simulate hiring committee conversations while providing learner choice in how to complete the lesson and demonstrate learning.

This example was created in Articulate Rise to help instructors make and select more accessible learning materials. Rise’s multimedia capabilities are leveraged in content, knowledge checks, and a final quiz. Realistic documents give learners meaningful practice and opportunities to compare their work with acceptable solutions. Parallel content built in Canvas, Blackboard CourseSites, and Moodle illustrates key differences in learner experience.

Process Documentation

The learner persona above was created in PowerPoint to help a newly formed instructional design team understand the new employees who would be learners in a blended employee orientation and onboarding program being designed and proposed for a multi-property resort complex. As one of five personas created by the team, this persona helped situate the orientation experience in relation to new employees’ diverse experiences, backgrounds, learning strategies, career histories, and goals.

Learner Perspectives

Everything is geared towards helping us learn.

Music History, face-to-face course
Everything from in-class activities to assignments has a purpose.

World Music, face-to-face course
By far the most organized teacher I have ever had.
Undergraduate Student
History of Rock Music, hybrid course
Laura's impeccable organization made the course easy to navigate, which facilitated a learning environment that allowed me to easily access support materials and go back to previous content. She also included an incredible wealth of resources and information, but again, the organization made it so that it wasn't overwhelming.
